We are fortunate to be able to see the amazing 1954 film “La Strada”. Made during the severe poverty that plagued Europe in the post WWII years, this super-low-budget film was made using an old silent film camera and was dubbed later.

Federico Fellini never used a script — he would made simple drawings to show the kind of character he was aiming for, and would coach his actors through every line of the film, feeding them each line and telling them how to deliver it as the camera was rolling. The final scene of the film caused Fellini so much emotion as he coached the Irish-Mexican-American actor Anthony Quinn so well into feeling completely “hopeless, lost, desperate” that the director suffered a nervous breakdown and had to go to the hospital.

But Gelsomina stole the show, played by Fellini’s wife Giulietta Masina. She said over 1,000 Italian women wrote her to say their husbands came back to them after watching this film.

The film also has a rich subtext of the tensions between different types of men, and presence of the spirit world, which may have a greater affect on us than we know.

“La Strada” so impressed Hollywood that they created the Foreign Language Film Oscar Award to recognize Fellini’s genius.
